Phenolic Label Color Chart & Finishes

Phenolic Label Color Chart & Finishes

Choosing an engraved label color is really two choices — the surface color and the color revealed when the material is engraved. This chart shows our standard stock combinations and finishes, and how to choose for legibility and safety conventions.

How the color works

Every plate has a cap (the surface, which becomes the background) and a core (the contrasting color revealed by engraving, which becomes the text). "White cap / black core" reads as black text on white; "red cap / white core" reads as white text on red. Most electrical and industrial labeling is 2-ply.

ANSI safety conventions

Where hazard or safety meaning applies, follow the conventions people read at a glance — red for danger and fire-related, high-contrast pairs for warnings — so labels stay consistent with the rest of a facility's safety signage.

Finishes

Satin has a subtle sheen, common for architectural signage. Textured is a pebble-style surface that resists fingerprints, grease, and scratches — the usual choice for industrial environments. Gloss is high-shine and best for decorative use, since it can glare in bright areas. Metallic and woodgrain options are also stocked.

Temperature and high-heat

Standard laminates are rated for typical indoor and outdoor electrical and industrial use; high-heat phenolic options are available on request when an application requires them.

Custom matching

If a project requires a specific brand color, a facility standard, or a non-stock combination, we can source and match custom laminates.

Not sure which to choose? See how to choose phenolic label colors and ply for contrast and legibility, or send your spec and we'll recommend a pairing.
