NEC Labeling Requirements for Electrical Identification

Accurate, durable labeling isn't just good practice — across much of electrical construction it's a code requirement under the National Electrical Code. This guide gives the plain-language overview of what the NEC expects for identification and marking, and links to the detailed requirements for each area. Permanence is the throughline
NEC 110.21(B) requires field-applied hazard markings to be durable enough for their environment and does not allow handwriting for hazard markings. Whatever else a requirement says, identification generally has to stay legible for the life of the equipment — which is why engraved identification is common for the fixed, code-referenced pieces.
Circuit and equipment identification
Panelboards, switchboards, and switchgear must carry specific circuit identification, and disconnecting means must identify their source of supply. Arc flash and hazard marking
Equipment likely to be serviced while energized carries arc-flash warning and hazard marking under the NEC and NFPA 70E. Legibility, contrast, and placement
The NEC expects identification to be legible without interpretation aids, so choose high-contrast color pairs (black-on-white and white-on-black are the most widely used), size text to the viewing distance, and position labels immediately adjacent to the device or circuit served.

The NEC runs on a three-year cycle, and the 2026 edition became available in September 2025 — but the edition that governs your project is whichever your state or local jurisdiction has adopted, and that varies widely. Confirm the adopted edition with your local building department or AHJ before finalizing a labeling standard.
