Missing or illegible labels are one of the simplest reasons to fail an electrical inspection, and one of the easiest to prevent. Here is a working checklist of the field-marking requirements that come up most often.
What inspectors look for
- Disconnecting means marked to identify what they control.
- Service equipment marked with the maximum available fault current and the date it was calculated.
- Arc-flash warning marking on equipment likely to be examined while energized.
- Series-rated systems marked as such at the equipment.
- Directories that clearly identify the load served by each circuit, with no "spare" left over a live breaker.
Why engraved labels pass cleanly
Many marking rules require language that is permanent and legible, and that stands out from the surrounding equipment. A printed sticker or a marker note does not meet that intent for long.
