Solar & PV Labeling: NEC 690 and 705 Marking Requirements

A solar installation can require anywhere from a dozen to well over a hundred labels and placards, all mandated by the NEC to protect first responders and maintenance crews. But there's a catch installers learn the hard way: solar panels are built to last 25 to 30 years, while a vinyl label kit can fade, curl, and peel in 5 to 7 years of direct sun — leaving the installation non-compliant with no warning. Where the requirements live
PV marking is centered in NEC Article 690 Part VI, with power-source identification for multiple sources centralized in Article 705. The 2023 code reorganized several of these — notably moving the building rapid-shutdown placard requirement from 690.56(C) to 690.12(D) and consolidating power-source directory requirements into 705.10 — so the exact citation depends on the edition your jurisdiction has adopted. Confirm the adopted edition before finalizing a label schedule.
The key labels
A compliant PV system typically needs: the rapid shutdown building placard at the service equipment (stating "SOLAR PV SYSTEM EQUIPPED WITH RAPID SHUTDOWN," with a roof diagram and the location of the initiation device); a label at the rapid shutdown switch itself; disconnect labels marking "PV SYSTEM DISCONNECT" with the maximum system voltage, plus a shock-hazard warning where terminals stay energized when open; conduit and raceway marking ("WARNING: PHOTOVOLTAIC POWER SOURCE") at intervals along DC runs; and a power source directory at the service equipment listing the interconnected sources.
A format note worth knowing
Under the 2020 code the rapid shutdown placard had to be reflective, white on red, with minimum letter heights. The 2023 code relaxed the color and reflectivity mandate to require only contrasting text — but many jurisdictions and inspectors still expect the familiar red/white, so confirm with your AHJ rather than assuming.
