While Custom Phenolic Labels routinely fulfills specifications calling for phenolic, lamicoid, or Traffolyte labels, the materials used in modern production are impact-modified engraving laminates engineered to outperform legacy phenolic in nearly every real-world application.

The Legacy Material: What Is “True” Phenolic?

True phenolic is a thermoset resin made from phenol and formaldehyde, reinforced with paper or fabric layers and cured under heat and pressure. It is a highly specified material governed by strict international standards, including NEMA LI 1 (Industrial Laminates), ASTM D709 (Thermosetting Materials), and MIL-I-24768 (Military Specification for Insulating Materials).

True phenolic was widely used from the 1930s through the 1980s for electrical components and engraved identification tags. The material was manufactured in specific grades classified by reinforcement type: Paper grades (NEMA X/XX), Canvas grades (NEMA C/CE), and Linen grades (NEMA L/LE).

Advantages of Legacy Phenolic

Why True Phenolic Is Rarely Used Today

True phenolic is largely obsolete for general identification and labeling applications. The material’s brittleness makes it unsuitable for modern construction environments, solar installations, and field service conditions where labels are handled, drilled, and mounted under imperfect conditions. Legacy phenolic also cannot meet modern expectations for UV stability, color variety, flexibility, or safe fabrication. The vast majority of “phenolic labels” manufactured and installed today use modern engraving laminates, not thermoset phenolic resin.

The Modern Standard: Impact-Modified Acrylic and Engraving Laminates

These materials represent the current industry standard for engraved labels sold under the “phenolic” name. They are thermoplastic laminates specifically engineered for precision engraving, CNC routing, and laser processing.

Performance Considerations

Modern engraving laminates have a lower heat tolerance than true thermoset phenolic. Standard formulations are typically rated for continuous service temperatures between 175 and 200 degrees F. For applications near steam lines, boilers, or high-temperature process equipment, specialty high-heat materials are available upon request.

Why Custom Phenolic Labels Uses Modern Laminates

Impact-modified acrylics and engraving laminates meet or exceed the performance requirements of electrical, mechanical, and automation labeling codes while offering dramatically better durability, safety, color options, and legibility than legacy phenolic materials. For the overwhelming majority of applications, modern laminates are the superior choice.

Comparison: Legacy Phenolic vs. Modern Engraving Laminates

Rigidity: Legacy phenolic is very rigid but brittle. Modern laminates are rigid with controlled flexibility that prevents cracking.

Impact Resistance: Legacy phenolic has poor impact resistance and shatters under stress. Modern laminates offer excellent impact resistance, even when overtorqued during screw mounting.

Electrical Properties: Both materials are electrically non-conductive. Modern laminates provide high dielectric strength suitable for use in electrical enclosures and control panels.

UV Stability: Legacy phenolic has poor UV resistance and degrades outdoors. Modern UV-stable laminates are rated for 10+ years of outdoor vertical exposure without significant fading.

Color Availability: Legacy phenolic is limited to brown, black, and natural tones. Modern laminates are available in hundreds of cap/core color combinations, including metallic and woodgrain finishes.

Fabrication Safety: Legacy phenolic generates hazardous dust during machining and cannot be safely laser engraved. Modern laminates engrave cleanly on both laser and rotary equipment with no hazardous byproducts.

Mounting Options: Legacy phenolic typically required rivets or screws. Modern laminates support adhesive backing (including 3M industrial adhesive), screws, rivets, and cable tie mounting.

Unless otherwise specified, labels from Custom Phenolic Labels are produced using 2-ply impact-modified acrylic or microsurfaced engraving laminate stock. Standard Indoor Material

Typical Applications: Electrical panels, control cabinets, switchgear, motor control centers, indoor mechanical rooms, server racks, and data center infrastructure.

Composition: Microsurfaced ABS or impact-modified acrylic, 2-ply construction.

Available Finishes: Matte, satin, or textured.

Service Temperature Range: -40 degrees F to 175 degrees F (-40 degrees C to 80 degrees C).

Chemical Resistance: Resistant to water, alcohols, mild acids, and common cleaning solutions.

Electrical Properties: Non-conductive / insulator. Safe for use inside energized electrical enclosures.

Standard Thickness: 1/16 inch (1.6 mm). Also available in 1/32 inch and 1/8 inch.

UV-Stable Outdoor Material

Typical Applications: Solar PV systems (NEC 690 labeling), rooftop units, exterior disconnect switches, outdoor safety signage, and any label exposed to direct sunlight.

Composition: Impact-modified acrylic with UV-resistant cap layer.

UV Performance: Outdoor-rated materials are selected to match the exposure, orientation, climate, and expected service life of the installation.

Available Finishes: Matte or textured (gloss not recommended for outdoor use due to glare).

Compliance: Meets NEC 690 requirements for permanent, durable marking on photovoltaic systems.

High-Heat and Chemical-Resistant Materials

Typical Applications: Washdown environments, food processing facilities, pharmaceutical clean rooms, industrial process areas, and specialty equipment near heat sources.

Construction: Reverse-engraved acrylic or specialty laminates with paint-filled text on the rear surface.

Engraving Method: Text is engraved on the back of the material and filled with contrasting paint. The smooth front surface resists abrasion, chemicals, and aggressive cleaning agents.

Service Temperature: Up to 300 degrees F or higher depending on material selection and application requirements.

“Lamicoid” was a brand name for an early engraving laminate produced decades ago. The company no longer exists, but the term remains on drawings. Today, “Lamicoid” simply means 2-ply rigid engraved plastic, which modern acrylic laminates fully satisfy.
