Cap and core: how the color works

An engraved laminate has two layers that matter: the cap (the surface, which becomes the background) and the core (the contrasting color revealed when the material is engraved, which becomes the text). Choosing a label color means choosing both. A "red cap / white core" plate reads as white text on red; "white cap / black core" reads as black text on white.

Contrast drives legibility

The NEC expects identification to be legible without interpretation aids, so contrast is the first priority. Black-on-white and white-on-black are the most widely used, highest-legibility combinations. Reserve color for meaning rather than decoration.

ANSI safety conventions

Where hazard or safety meaning applies, follow the conventions people already read at a glance: red for danger and fire-related, yellow/black for caution, and high-contrast pairs for warnings. Using the ANSI or a facility convention keeps your labels consistent with the rest of the site's safety signage.

2-ply vs 3-ply

Two-ply (cap over core) covers the majority of electrical and industrial labeling. Three-ply constructions add a second core color, used where a design needs two engraved colors or a specific layered effect. Most panel, disconnect, and equipment ID is 2-ply.

Finish matters in the field

Satin has a subtle sheen and suits architectural or office-adjacent work. Textured (a pebble surface) resists fingerprints, grease, and scratches, which is why it's the common choice for industrial environments. Gloss looks sharp but can glare under bright light, so it's better for decorative than plant-floor use.
