"Which material should I use?" comes up on almost every project. Each option has a place. Here is how they compare for industrial identification.
Engraved phenolic
Rigid, non-conductive, and permanent. The text is engraved through a cap layer, so it cannot rub off. Best for panels, switchgear, nameplates, and anywhere a durable, code-friendly plate is expected.
Metal (aluminum or stainless)
Extremely durable and heat tolerant, and the right call for very high temperature or heavy mechanical abuse. The tradeoff is that metal is conductive, which is a real consideration around energized equipment, and it costs more.
Printed polyester
Thin, flexible, and inexpensive for high volumes. Good for temporary or low-stress marking. The tradeoff is that printed surfaces can scuff, fade, or peel over time, which is why they are not ideal for permanent equipment identification.
Quick rule of thumb
- Permanent equipment ID around electrical gear: engraved phenolic.
- Extreme heat or heavy abrasion: metal.
- High-volume, short-life marking: printed polyester.
